What is the BRC? We are an all-encompassing, all-hands-on-deck anti-poverty effort that is working to save the most vulnerable children in our community from staying trapped in the cycle in Wilmington, NC.
Welcome to the BRC
WHAT IS THE BRC?
The Blue Ribbon Commission on the Prevention of Youth Violence (BRC) was formed in 2008 as a response to the prevalent violence among youth in the North side of downtown Wilmington at the time. Now known as “The Youth Enrichment Zone”, this 140 square block area includes 3 public schools and one private charter school.
The BRC uses an asset-based community development model & positive youth development programs to reach children in their homes, schools and neighborhoods. Our on-going work with collaborative partners provides access to the following resources:
- after school and summer programs
- job skills programs
- parental support
- access to health and wellness services
- behavioral and mental health services
- assisting with basic needs and food insecurity
We strive to saturate the Zone with resources that can help our families build a pathway out of poverty. Our goal is to provide exposure and opportunities to the world outside of their immediate environment. Despite the vulnerabilities they face, we don’t believe our children’s future should be defined by their circumstances.
